John Foltz: listen

Dragon's Breath

(John Foltz)
December 15, 2001
John Foltz / Charles C. Everett
I wrote this song during one of the many, many, many... times I was quitting smoking. I finally kicked the habit before it kicked me, but not until pretty recently. My wife feels the title is especially apropos.
Take a breath of fire and the dragon’s come
The roar of my soul comes before I can run
I feel the dragons and I have a burning in my heart

The restless men have a path for my life
They lay their hands before me
They pat my back while they’re pushing me into the ground
Why in hell can’t they understand?
I only wanna be a peaceful man

Take a breath of ice and the dragon’s calm
The roar of my soul cools away in my palms
I hide from the dragons and my hands are cold inside my heart

My eyes play games with the words that I say
I’ve said more than I meant
They set me aside and reveal what my voice tries to hide
What’s inside that I can’t control?
I only wanna understand my soul

So take a breath of truth and the dragons fall
The roar of my soul isn’t there when I call
I find the dragons as they fight for control of my heart

I seek refuge from my eyes
To put away the things I could not hide
But the restless men are determined
They have much in common with my soul
When they lie about control
And they pray my life caves in

But with a breath of life, let the dragons die
The roar of my soul burns the voice that I hide
I fight off the dragons and I feel nothing holding back my heart
