John Foltz: listen

Fly

(John Foltz)
December 15, 2001
John Foltz
I originally wrote this song with children in mind. Then through both internal and external realization, found it was far too depressing to contemplate releasing. However, my father died about a year before I wrote this. He wasn't a direct inspiration, but I can picture him having these thoughts and questions as he briefly prepared to exit this experience.
In a room of coldness, would you bring me sun?
In this bed of sickness, make me laugh and smile
I have many questions, that if you answered
It would make me feel that it’s all right to leave

‘Cause I’m gonna fly
Where do we go when we die?
Is it high above the thunder?
Don’t leave me alone to wonder why
Why do we die?

Always thought that I could be a millionaire
Guess it won’t turn out that way, but then I don’t care
Would’ve liked to have known what being in love is like
Would’ve liked to have known what it’s like to fly

‘Cause I’m gonna fly
Where do we go when we die?
Is it high above the thunder?
Don’t leave me alone to wonder why
Why do we die?

Is there anyone else I know that’s up there?
Will I be as alone as I feel right now?
Will I ever see you again if I go?
These are things I’d never hoped to have to know
So in the meantime

Will you be my teacher, will you be my friend?
Will you let me rest my head upon your shoulder?
If you’re strong enough to love me, then you’ve shown me what it’s like
I can finally know how free it feels when I take to the sky

Won’t you tell me now
‘Cause I’m gonna fly
To where we go when we die
Going high above the thunder
Don’t leave me alone to wonder why
Why do we die?
